KASP 57591 Louis Spohr (1784-1859) was one of the finest of the near-great composers of the 19th Century. A reknowned violin virtuoso and conductor, he was a prolific composer of chamber music, works for violin, and symphonies. This CD presents the first ever recording of his only Piano Sonata, and the first recording on a modern piano of his Rondoletto.

The American Record Guide wrote about "Spohr's Sonata in A Flat, expertly played here by Donald Isler.....Mr. Isler's thoughtful performance does much to persuade that it is a sonata worth reviving.....He grasps the work's essence and reads into it a shrewdness and elegance."
The Newsletter of the Spohr Society of Great Britain said "Donald Isler offers strong, positive interpretations which happily agree with Spohr's own known feelings about how his music should be projected."

The Sonata in D Major of Schubert featured here is one of the great works of that composer's last years. A virtual world unto itself it includes a brilliant first movement, great abandon in its scherzo, charm and delicacy in its finale and a slow movement of Beethovenian profundity.
Of this performance the Newsletter of the Spohr Society of Great Britain wrote "Schubert's wonderful D Major Sonata gets an impressive interpretation."
